Love & Moxie is rooted in an ethical framework of inclusion. This is a social framework, not a medical frame. Diagnostic categories in medicine do evolve over time, and it is useful to reflect on whether they reflect the integrity of our human experience. As an ethicist, I believe it is always vital to apply our ethics to our lives in practical ways that honor our experiences. We once treated hysteria and homosexuality as illnesses requiring intervention. We can stay in our lane and still notice when someone starts weaving.
My dream is for people to be far more open-minded about the wide variety of bodies and brains on planet earth. How that impacts diagnostic categories remains to be seen and falls outside the scope of my work. I do believe in an applied ethics frame. I can help educate people about the ways in which new research reveals that sometimes we may unintentionally mistake evidence of systemic injustice for individual pathology. Every kind of mind belongs here.
